Mechanical Waves- is a disturbance in matter that carries energy from one place to another
-water is the medium
- is created when a source of energy causes a vibration to travel through a medium
- classified by the way they move through a medium
Types of Mechanical Waves
Transverse Waves
Longitudinal Waves
Surface Waves
Transverse Waves- a wave that causes the medium to vibrate at right angles in the direction in which the waves travels.
-crest is the highest point in the wave.
-trough is the lowest point.
Ex) -shaking a rope.
- oceans wave.
Longitudinal Waves- a wave in which the vibration of the medium is is parallel to the direction the wave travels.
Rarefaction- and area where the particles in a medium are spread out.
Compression- an area where the particles in a medium are spread close together.
Examples:
- Spring
-Slinkies
Surface Waves-A wave that travels along a surface separating two media. Example of Surface Wave- The well known, and loved ocean waves.
